There are many great reasons and examples of texts from our media that parallels to a book called The Giver. A few examples are on articles about Edward Snowden, incarcerating the population of the US, Arizona’s ban on books, and songs such as Muse. All of these texts and articles show us strong pieces of evidence on how the Giver society explores and parallels our society.
Edward Snowden’s situation and articles parallel The Giver society. Three reasons to have support my thesis statement are stating that Edward Snowden has been spying on the NSA and the FBI. In a way, I can compare this to The Giver by saying that both worlds have characters, Jonas & Edward, who knew some things that no one but them knew about. My second reason all of this has happened because the NSA and the FBI were keeping secrets from the public so that we would all seem clueless. If I were him, I would have done the same thing. And for that Edward Snowden told everyone the secrets. Mirroring this is Jonas trying to transmit memories to Gabriel. There are a few reasons why Edward Snowden’s situation and articles parallels The Giver.
The article about incarcerating population of the US parallels the Giver society because it explores control. Both worlds explore control by trapping the people from the truth. The giver society is straight up not telling their citizens the truth and lying to them. Our world however, is taking people to jail. They are trapping them, LITERALLY. About 7oo people are being imprisoned in the US. And lastly, when people are being locked away they might forget everything that’s been happening, and feel held back from everything that’s been going on in the world. In other words, now you know how the population of the US is being incarcerated and how it parallels the Giver society.
Arizona’s ban on books makes it clear on how it parallels the Giver. I can easily state that Arizona is banning books because of what the books contain in them. Such as things they weren’t suppose to hear or know. Some of the books had things about food and what the truth is about what is in them like chemicals that could kill. Or some that had shown what really happens to people when they die instead of just saying that they go to “a better place.” But not always are these things bad. I am saying that even if these books tell us very unusual things, we still need to know about this. Knowing these things could help you to become more prepared for what will happen. Now you have received knowledge of the book - banning in Arizona.
Songs also contain lyrics that contain lines that parallel the Giver. In the song Uprising by Muse, a line of lyrics state “THEY WILL NOT CONTROL US.” Which clearly says that they will not let others tell them what to do, and that they are their own person, not wanting to be the same. I can compare that to The Giver by reasoning that both societies have only a few characters that don’t want to be the same as everyone else. The Giver society relates to Muse’s song Uprising. By controlling their own citizens and telling them lies on how to live their live. And I bet there are many other songs that show us different ways to connect to the Giver and his society. Many other songs by many other people who feel trapped and inspiration by that to make songs, such as Muse.
Well, all-in-all you see how these things parallel to our class book, The Giver. Articles on Edward Snowden show us the secrets. Incarcerating rates show us being imprisoned. Banning books show us that we need to be informed. And even songs, tell us the truth to not always take commands. There are many ways to connect something to The Giver.
